Thanks to all who completed the OOTA Future Directions survey at the October Conference. The Executive Board got some valuable information and we have used that feedback to plan for 2006. A summary of the main points are as follows:

• Supports our decision to have three meetings per year
• Dues appear to be at an acceptable level
• Newsletter: members appear to prefer to receive it by mail, four times a year.
• What should we be doing that we are not doing now? No clear message
• Most people only belong to OOTA/AOTA
• CEUs appear to be main reason people belong to OOTA
• Most people don’t join because the company no longer pays for dues.
• Most people don’t volunteer because of family and other interests.

Based on this input, Executive Board has decided to have only three OOTA-sponsored continuing education programs in 2006 – March, June, and our annual conference in the fall. We will set the conference date once college football schedules are set, as the games affect our attendance.

Since dues appear to be at an acceptable level, the Executive Board will recommend that the dues remain at $85 for OTRs, $55 for COTAs, and $25 for occupational therapy students for the fiscal year which runs from July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007.

The Oklahoma Outlook will be published only four times this year (instead of six times), and will be sent to members by mail.

Our main effort, other than continuing education, will be the OT Month activity in April at the Lowes Stores. See the Community Promotion Committee report for more information on how to get involved.

Executive Board is striving to make OOTA as relevant as possible for practitioners. We appreciate all the ideas, feedback, and assistance that members have provided. We look forward to a productive year ahead.

Your OOTA Board has been busy on several important issues.

Member survey results were reviewed for planning upcoming continuing education opportunities in the state. Continuing education events plus membership meetings will be held three times a year rather than four. The fourth meeting will be held jointly with an Executive Board meeting with membership invited. This will help keep quality high and cost low.

Finance has become critical to our organization and a big focus in Board discussions. Due to the drop in our membership and fees we have a declining income. The Board passed a motion for our Treasurer to develop a proposal to allow OOTA to begin billing for advertising on our website in the future. More sponsors will be sought for upcoming continuing education events. Economies of spending for phone, mailing, and other costs of the board are being implemented. A finalized budget should be prepared at the January meeting of the Board.

Plans are in the works for April OT month promotion events at Lowe’s stores.

TREASURER’S Report
Suzette W. Jones, OTR/L
Submitted December 31, 2005

FINANCIAL STATUS: As of December 31, 2005 OOTA has assets (money in the bank) of $33,706.82. The financial Statement for July 1, 2005 through December 31, 2005 is as follows:
Income: Total income $33,228.77
Expenses: Total expenses $15,978.21
Profit year to date: $17,250.56

Summary: The income is from dues ($16,209), the July Quarterly meeting ($2405, the annual Conference 2005 ($14,242) and miscellaneous ($373). Expenses during the first half of this fiscal year are directly related to the Quarterly meeting and annual conference, membership drive, administrative assistant to work on these and miscellaneous other costs. The annual conference had a profit of $6,045, July quarterly meeting $1620 and the balance of the profit comes from the membership drive.

BUDGET 2005: The budget for July 2005 through June 2006 is being developed with input from the Executive Board. The money we have now must sustain OOTA and its activities for the remainder of the fiscal year. We cannot count on profit from other Quarterly meetings as it is too difficult to project. A conservative budget will be set up based on current money available. Any profit generated from January through June 2006 will allow the association to take on added activities or costs or plan for a bigger annual conference.

TAXES: Taxes were filed in October 2005. We did not owe taxes due to the losses sustained during the fiscal year July 04 through June 05.

Happy New Year!

I would like to take this time to introduce myself, I am Stacey Parsons, COTA/L your OOTA COTA Representative. I am a 1998 graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma State University/Caddo Kiowa Technology Center Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. For the past six years I have been teaching in the very program that I graduated from. Before that I practiced in long term care in Texas.

With 2005 complete, I would like to look to our future and what 2006 holds for us. There are several goals we would like to accomplish this year and I would like to have your help in reaching these goals. I would like to know what you as practicing COTAs would like to accomplish this year and how can we help you. What issues or concerns do you have that we as your state association can help you with? Please feel free to e-mail, call or write at any time with any questions or concerns.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope your 2006 year is off to a great start.

We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year's holiday. At the beginning of 2006 the Medicare Caps have been reinstated. We are back to $1740 for Occupational Therapy and $1740 for Speech and Physical Therapy Combined for Medicare B Patient Services. These caps not only affect the Medicare B patients in long term care facilities, but also will affect those Medicare B patients in Home Health who have used up their annual service amounts.

We still need for all of you to write your congressmen to try to encourage repeal of these caps once and for all as well as anyone you can encourage to write as well. Keep in mind that AOTA is continuing to work at a legislative level on our behalf and AOTPAC can still use any funds you might be able to contribute.

AOTA is working to help us. They are hosting a Free AOTA Teleconference which focuses on Medicare Changes. Learn How to Provide Optimum Services Under the Rules for the Therapy Cap.

Confused by what Congress did at the end of the year? Don't feel alone. Join your colleagues and your AOTA staff in Washington to answer your questions. If you're providing outpatient therapy, it's urgent that you
understand the bottom line regarding impending therapy cap changes and their impact on you and your clients in 2006. Plan now to participate in AOTA's upcoming FREE teleconference for members on Thursday, January 12, at 4 p.m. I hope this will be helpful to you all.

I hope everyone had a wonderful break.  I wanted to let all the students know that we are going to promote OT month again this year at Lowe’s.  This will take place in April and we will have booths setup at many Lowe’s in the Tulsa and OKC areas.  I encourage all students to take part in this activity.  It is a lot of fun and a good way to let our community know about occupational therapy.  If you are interested in please contact me and I can give you more information.  I wish everyone a successful spring semester and if I can do anything for please let me know.

Occupational Therapy Committee
of the
Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision
Notes from Oct. 27, 2005 meeting

Present:  Janet Schnaffner, Maggie Snook, Ginger Castleberry, Anne Marie Grassmann, Patty Smith.

There were three personal appearance by therapists wishing to reinstate their licenses.  Teresa Tisdell, OT appeared before the committee to talk about telerehabilitation and Occupational Therapy.  Initial evaluations are done on site, but this technology could enable a therapist to provide supervision of a COTA or to monitor teechniques used by  family members.  It is hoped that this method of supervision can be approved for COTAs in remote areas who are working in schools and nursing homes. A demonstration of this method of providing remote supervision of Occupational Therapy will be provided at the next meeting of the committee, Feb.9, 2006.

The Board staff was pleased with the reception of computer based renewal of licensure.  Efforts are being made to include OTAs in the next renewal period.
