OOTA offers great opportunities for continuing education.  The topic at the February 2, 2008 OOTA quarterly meeting was, “Professional Development Toolkit Using AOTA, NBCOT, & Oklahoma Licensure Professional Development Tools.”  Have you met the NBCOT and Oklahoma Licensure requirements?  If not, now is the time to put your plan in action!

NBCOT:

bullet1 PDU = 1 contact unit = 1/10 of CEU
bullet1 contact equals at least 50 minutes.
bulletRequires 36 hours of professional development activities every three years. (18 PDUS need to be OT specific.)

 State Licensure Board:

bullet1 CEU = 10 contact hours
bullet1 contact hour = 60 minutes
bulletA point is the equivalent of 1 contact hour.
bulletRequires 20 contact hours every two years.

Thanks to everyone who attended the annual conference as OOTA celebrated its 40th birthday! (I hope you enjoyed a piece of the delicious cake!)

There was a great plenary session on Motivational Interviewing, as well as several breakout sessions addressing a variety of specialty practice areas.    The conference also provided a great chance to network.  It’s fun to visit with former co-workers and meet new colleagues.  (I heard you can find out about many OTA opportunities this
way!)

As your COTA rep, I’m very sad to say that there wasn’t a recipient this year for COTA of the Year.  Please, please, please – VOTE!

Requirements for COTA of the Year include:
1) must be a member in good standing of OOTA
2) must have attended at least two OOTA meetings
3) must have contributed to the profession of OT in a manner

Previously, I challenged you to set both personal and professional goals.  I hope you’re continuing to work and achieve some of the goals you’ve chosen.

My challenge to you now is to help spread the news about occupational therapy.  Do you remember when you first found about occupational therapy?  I do.  I’ll have to admit I had no clue.  Fortunately for me, someone who knew about OT took the time to tell me all about it.  I decided to enroll in the OTA program at OKCCC and graduated in 1997.  There are still many people who don’t understand what occupational therapy is all about.  Who better to help spread the news than YOU?

Challenge:  Share the news about occupational therapy with a young person this week.  You may change their career path forever.

If you have any comments, questions, concerns, or suggestions, please feel free to e-mail me.  My e-mail address is dsmart@suddenlink.net

COTA OF THE YEAR?  WHO?  ME?

Wow!  What a surprise!  I’d like to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for bestowing this honor upon me.  I’d like to say thanks to all the OT’s and COTAs that I’ve worked with through the years – each of you has made a big difference in my life!  (Thanks to all my PT and PTA friends too!)

 Blessings,

Debbie Smart, COTA/L
